![]() Its combo when it gets turn 3 karn, but takes a pretty midrange role when it plays through disruption. Tron is a 'midrange-combo' type deck if we strictly use the four archtypes per the OP. The designations of archtypes does not take into consideration what magic cards actually do outside of a vacuum, and considering what Tron does, there is lots of gray area to consider. This question is one of those things that tends to cause pointlessly heated arguments. I'm just gonna start by saying this is just my opinion. So pick a definition, shove Tron in one category and start doing linear regressions or whatever the fuck your project demands! That said, if this is a statics project the difference is probably academical: the point is the math, not the mtg-specific conclusions. Depending on how exactly you choose to define these archtypes, Tron will better fit one or the other. The truth of the matter is that while most people have a fairly good idea of what these categories are generally speaking, there isn't really one "set in stone" legal definition of the term, and playets will, in fact, often quarrel over the details (e.g.: see this thread).Īt the end of the day Tron has characteristics of both combo (the devk achieves practically nothing until it has a specific combination of cards in play) and control (Tron's primary method of winning the game is to present overwhelming answers that take over control of the game). Since no one seems to be giving you the correct answer from a scientific research point of view, allow me: depends on how you defined each category. > Also, what the HECK do I classify tron as? The closest that Dredge gets to that is Conflagrate taking out blockers and the occasional spot removal. Tron uses cards that actively wipe the board or problem permanents, and even control the cards in a graveyard. That loss of three life is significantly more relevant than the gaining three. Specifically, Creeping Chill's purpose in the deck being it's ability to speed up the deck's clock. Those cards are there to speed up the win. Tron can consistently land bombs (that actively reduce both the number and significance of the opponent's possible gamestate actions) and, if need be, just restart the game entirely if anything goes wrong.Ī good way to understand why Dredge isn't control is by it's inclusion of cards like Creeping Chill, and it's use of Conflagrate. Dredge can only dredge so many times before they can't dredge any more. ![]() Dredge kind of tries to minimize the significance of an opponent's decisions (by going wide against many decks, or by being resilient to typical board wipes), but that's as close as Dredge comes. A control deck, by a basic definition, is trying to control the number and significance of the opponent's decisions. That and Dredge isn't actively trying to stop the opponent from having relevant decisions, but is trying to focus on having more decisions sooner. I disagree that Dredge gets better as the game goes on.
